Slow and steady wins the race

True progress quietly and persistently moves along without notice.

– St. Francis of Assisi

I am reminded of the Aesop fable The Tortoise and the Hare. It tells of a tortoise who challenges a hare to a race after he becomes tired of hearing him boast about how fast he could run. Judging by the tortoises slow pace, the hare underestimates the tortoises ability to win the race and pauses to rest. Thinking there is plenty of time to relax, the hare ends up falling asleep, and is later awakened by the loud cheers from the animals watching the race. As the hare jumps up and begins to run again, it is too late because the tortoise has already crossed the finish line.

This fable reinforces that it doesn’t matter how you start, it’s how you finish. It wasn’t the tortoises speed but his persistence that propelled him forward to win the race. As you persist everyday, whether it be in your career or your relationships, remember you may not be where you want to be, but you’ve left…quietly and persistently you are winning.
